» Divine Family: {mother & father} Loki and Angrboda ; {spouse} none; {siblings} Fenrir and Jormungandr; {children} none
» Mythology:
Hel is the daughter of Loki and Angrboda. She was one of three children, her brothers being Fenrir and Jormungandr. The three siblings were part of a prophesy, that they would bring no good to the world. Odin then had them brought to him and separated them. While her brothers were bound and cast away, she was given a job. Odin granted her nine kingdoms in Niflheim to rule over. Her job was to take and judge the dead that died from old age and sickness.
Hel figured in the death and attempted resurrection of Baldr. While Baldr lay suffering from his deadly wound, Hel came to him in a vision. She comforted him by telling him that she would come to him in three days, and then she would take him in her arms. Three days later, she came and personally ended Baldr’s suffering. Baldr’s mother, Frigg, distraught with grief, asked that someone go to Hel’s realm and offer her a random to let Baldr return to life. Hermodr, son of Odin, took the task and traveled to Hel’s domain. He actually stayed over night, and in the morning made his request. Hel made him a bargain. If he could prove that all the world wept for the loss of Baldr, then he could return. But if even one thing refused to cry for him, then Baldr would remain with her. When the giantess named Thokk (who was Loki in disguise) refused to cry, Baldr was doomed to remain with Hel.
In the myth of Ragnarok, it is said that those in Hel’s domain would stand with Loki’s forces.
For the non-Viking cultures that worshiped her, Hel was seen as a just ruler of the afterlife. It was said she could see through a person’s soul so that only the truth of them remained, which made her a very good judge. She was not considered to be cruel or unfair, though it was extremely difficult for anyone to rescue someone from her kingdoms.
To the Vikings her kingdoms were viewed as a horrible place, full of dead bodies and decay. Her realm was seen as a doom rather than a peaceful end.
Hel was said to be both black and flesh colored, with a fierce appearance. Her servants were named “slow-walking” and she ate from a plate called Hunger with utensils called Famine. Her bed was called the Sick-bed. As her realm was not meant for those who died in battle, these attributes only make sense, as death by any of those factors would lead someone to Hel’s domain.

» Current Name: Wren Millet
» Birthdate: 10/31/1984
» Height: 5’6”
» Distinguishing Marks:
» Family: {mother & father} Phillipe and Abigail Millet ; {marital status/spouse} single; {siblings} none; {children} none; {pets} Rafe (a husky/wolf mix)
» Occupation: Medium
» Currently Residing In: New Orleans
» Ability: She can reap souls from living vessels. If the person is close enough to death, she can draw out their soul completely, effectively killing the person. If the person is in perfect health she can only take a small amount. The drawing out of the soul imparts a bit of knowledge of the victim to her. The more of the soul she can take, the more information she will get about the person. Taking a person’s soul will cause them to feel physically weaker. She can return what she took from her target at any time. Hel can also hear and see the dead.
» History:
1854- She was a member of the 38 nurses that worked with Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War. She helped soldiers pass over, when they were too far gone to be saved.
1940- She was again a nurse, serving in the navy. She was on board the USS Solace, one of the only ships to bring medical relief to the navy. She reprised her role as merciful death to those that could not be saved.
Present-
To say Wren’s life was mostly unremarkable would not be an exaggeration. She was the most remarkable thing about her life. Her abilities manifested long before her memories, so as a child she could often be found playing as though with several others, though completely alone. When her parents asked her about her apparent imaginary friends, she’d tell them in detail who she was playing with. And her friends would turn out to be spirits of those who had died.
Living in New Orleans such things weren’t treated in the same manner that most places would. Her parents never discouraged her, or spoke ill of what she did. Their daughter had a gift and it was ill advised to discount such things.
Wren wasn’t exactly popular, but her peers didn’t harass her for her quirk. She spent a lot of her time by herself, and when her memories began to surface, she figured it was for the best. The small group of friends she did make were the real kind, and that was far preferable to a bunch of casual acquaintances. And nearly all of them were a quirky as she was, though she never did share that she was a reborn death goddess. Somehow that struck her as unbelievable even by New Orleans standards.
Not one to let her abilities go to waste, she carved out a respectable niche as a medium. Her reputation was flawless, as she was always correct. She even assists the New Orleans police from time to time to help them solve murders. Though she only does this if the spirit actually approaches her about it first.
» Personality:
She likes people, and enjoys learning about them. Their ins and outs, what makes them tick. So if you want to bend someone’s ear for an hour or two, Wren is an excellent choice. She enjoys people watching as well, and will quietly observe a gathering for hours on end.
She’s slow to judgment, preferring to see the full story before making any decisions. This means her impressions of people are nearly always accurate, and it is difficult to deceive her. She’s incredibly patient, as she understands that all anyone ever really has is time, so there’s no sense in rushing into anything. Therefore she is rarely ever rash. If she makes a quick decision on something, it is likely because the situation is either simple, or she is just very sure of what she believes or wants.
This tendency to read deeply between lines can make her feel distant, and indeed she has a habit of separating herself out from crowds. She can find humor in inappropriate situations, sadness in the lightest of jokes, and beauty in the darkest displays. Indeed, many people would call her morbid, and they wouldn’t be incorrect.
She can, and does, feel compassion, though it is usually for those who are truly suffering. Passing pains of life, like a break up, she waves off as trivial and passing. True grief or pain will get her empathy every time however. She dislikes suffering in others and desires to soothe it to a degree. For the dying, she offers a release from suffering. For those left behind, she is willing to offer some form of comfort to help them move beyond their grief.
She can be a little territorial, though not violently so. She believes what is hers is hers, and to give it up she’d need a very good reason to do so. This applies to both tangible things and intangible. Fighting her, for what she believes belongs to her, would prove frustrating, as she would stand firm and unbending. Convincing arguments and reason are the best tools to get something from Hel. If it makes sense to do something, she’s going to do it. If the reason is flimsy or merely selfish, she’ll never cave. An even far more expedient way to get something from her is an equal trade.
She is also acutely aware that she is different, both as a human and a deity. This gives her a bit of insecurity about herself. Compliments surprise her, and will either fluster her or be graciously waved off. She is far more comfortable with people putting some kind of distance between themselves and her, physically, mentally or emotionally. She has never been ‘normal’, and people, even friends, treating her as “other“ is just the way things work in her perspective.
» Other Notes:
She is very obviously southern, and it is evident when she speaks.
She is fluent in Cajun French.
» Sample Journal:
I think it’s a little sad how far removed people are from anything ‘supernatural’. Science is fine and all. But people have ignored the more spiritual side of themselves for so long that many of them are lost. They talk about Faith, but they don’t really know what that means anymore. It used to be gods would reinforce that faith. We’d poke our heads out and wave every now and again. Get involved. People could believe because we made ourselves known. Now, there’s so much desperation. People suffer loss and cry out for some kind of response. They strain to hear so hard, and nothing comes. It’s hard to keep faith when you never get an answer.
Maybe that’s why we’re doing all this. For them. Well, for us too, but it should be mostly for them. At least, I think so.
» Sample Log:
There was a ghost in the restaurant. He moved agitatedly around tables, like the solid material was still an obstacle to he had to navigate. So either he was recently deceased or in denial. Eventually, he noticed her eyes tracking him. Calm, unafraid and utterly unsurprised. It apparently startled him.
He recovered and came toward her. She just stirred more sugar into her coffee, the spoon making tiny clinking sounds against the earthen ware mug. When he finally came to stand in front of her, he hesitated. She figured she ought to take pity on him.
“Yes, I can see you.” The coffee was picked up, sipped, held. She liked the feeling of a warm mug between her palms. So simple a thing. Did he envy her that simple pleasure, or was he even thinking of such small nuances? She could find out. “Would you like to join me?”
