» Pantheon: Norse
» Deity: Tyr
» Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyr , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymir , http://www.pantheon.org/articles/t/tyr.html
» Divine Family: Father - Odin or Hymir (disputed); reputed consort, never identified; siblings - Thor, Hermod, Hod, Balder, and Vidar (possible brothers)
» Mythology:
Tyr is the Norse god of both war and justice. He is portrayed as a wise god as well as a warrior and battles for honorable causes rather than fighting for the sake of doing so. Before Odin's worship prevailed with the coming of the Vikings, Tyr was the primary deity of the Germanic peoples. However as Odin's worship grew, Tyr did not disappear from myths and instead was incorporated into the Norse pantheon primarily as a god of justice as Odin was seen as the god of war.
Tyr was often portrayed as the son of Odin in this new mythos, however other accounts depict him as the son of the sea giant, Hymir. However, if this was true, Tyr's loyalty was still to the Aesir. This was proven when he aided Thor in stealing Hymir's mile-long cauldron so the Aesir could use it to brew beer. This story also demonstrates Ty's level of strength, as it was shown to be comparable to Thor himself. The only other deity who could come so close to Thor was Thor's own son, Magni.
However, the most famous tale of Tyr demonstrates his courage and sense of duty is the story of the monster-wolf Fenrir. Fenrir was one of the monstrous children of Loki and Angrboda. He was prophesied to play a role in the destruction of the world, so the gods captured him as a pup and bound him. Only Tyr had been brave enough to feed him. As Fenrir got bigger and stronger, the gods knew the cage wouldn't hold him forever, so they sought to bind him completely. However, Fenrir's strength was so great that he broke all the chains the gods forged easily. Seeing that normal means wouldn't work, the gods commissioned the dwarves to forge a magic ribbon called Gleipnir, to bind him. Fenriri immediately suspected a trick and demanded that before the muzzle was put on him, that a god must place their hand in his mouth as a sign of trust. Only Tyr had the courage to do so and placed his right hand in the wolf's jaws. When the inevitable occurred and Fenrir couldn't break free, he bit Tyr's hand off. However, Tyr's sacrifice allowed the guides to bind Fenrir until the time of Ragnarok.

» Current Name: Kevin Shin
» Birthdate: October 12, 1974
» Height: 5'9"
» Distinguishing Marks: Right hand is covered with burn scars, usually covered with a glove.
» Family: Howard and Yunjin Shin, parents; Rebecca Tan,ex-wife; Sif, current wife (UPDATED)); Tina Shin, daughter, and son Carl Ethan Shin by Sif ((UPDATED))
» Occupation: United States Marine
» Currently Residing In: Los Angeles, California
» Ability: Kevin's body is at the pinnacle of human fitness. As a legacy of being the Norse god of war, he is at peak human strength, speed, durability, and stamina. However he is not superhuman in any of these aspects. He also has a passive ability to influence a person's better nature to convince them to do the just thing.
UPDATED ABILITIES: Tyr's argument go beyond insight and become impossible for someone to ignore the injustice in a situation he brings to their attention. Someone who knows won't be affected too much, but someone who believes they're justified will be conflicted due to undeniable facts. Tyr will regain his entire lifetime of martial skills, including the style's he mastered after he lost his hand.
SECOND UPDATE: Tyr: His bodily functions all move from peak-human to superhuman.
» History: Tyr had been reborn several times throughout history, usually as an officer in a country or other force's army. As the nature of war changed, so did Tyr, especially as battles drove them into the heart of enemy territory more often than not. Noncombatant villages were often attacked and looted, often conflicting with his sense of justice. He began go out of his way to ensure that just the lives of his soldiers, but also the lives of innocent enemy civilians, often putting himself in danger. In fact, several of his incarnations died this way, though he considered sacrifices worth it if he saved lives and preserved his troops' honor.
The life that began this belief system was Roderick Pemberton, a British captain during the Viking invasions of 870. He had witnessed a massacre of English civilians by the worshipers of his former kinsmen. He realized that while he had preached justice as part of his dogma, few took it into actual practice. He resolved to make up for this negligence in teaching his former worshipers by preventing such tragedies in the future. He would not have a chance as Pemberton as he would die from disease before the next incursion. He got his chance when he was reborn as Ignazio Baseggio, an Italian knight during the Third Crusade. He was among the officers who served with Richard the Lionhearted at the Siege of Acre. He had questioned the justice of the Crusade even before the events that would occur. When he learned Richard intended to kill the whole garrison as a warning to Saladin, Ignazio attempted to convince his superiors of the immorality of the act, but they were convinced God supported them. So Ignazio felt he had no choice, but to free several of the noncombatants from imprisonment himself. He was only able to free a few before he was caught and later executed for freeing "infidels".
He was most recently born Howard and Yunjin Shin, second generation Korean-Americans. Kevin grew up wanting to be a soldier and to fight for his country and the American people. In high school he met and fell in love with Rebecca Tan. The two married shortly after high school, having a daughter named Tina. However Kevin still wanted to serve in the Marines and had become a reservist, but after he returned Rebecca demanded that he stay home permanently. Kevin initially stayed to be a husband and father, but the argument had created a rift that would only grow. It would come to head during the Gulf War when Kevin volunteered for active duty.
As a Marine Kevin had been among those few on the ground. It was during an attack on an enemy-held town that he would remember who he had been. The village was still occupied by civilians, though it was too late to call the attack off. Kevin has seen a Kuwaiti boy in the line of fire and rushed to move to push him out of the way. A nearby explosion went off, burning his right hand. This triggered his memories of his previous lives along with it's beginning as Tyr. His injuries to his hand were to extensive to continue fighting and when he returned to camp, he was to be shipped back at home. When he did, he learned his wife had been having an affair and was filing for a divorce. With his ruined hand, it would be difficult to provide for his daughter himself. Reluctantly he allowed her majority custody so long as he could see her. She agreed and allowed him to see Tina relatively unrestricted as she knew her ex-husband was reliable despite their own issues. Kevin currently works as a security guard at a local mall. His hand is getting better, though still difficult to use. It was after work one day that he received the email.
» Personality: Kevin considers himself very much an every-man, despite being both an ex-Marine and a God. He has no sense of arrogance or pretension and is very approachable. He has a strong sense of right and wrong, strengthened over the wars he's seen and participated in. As such he's more likely to protect an innocent then he would have been as a god. He is a caring and affectionate father, but regrets his limitations and sometimes questions the cost. The first time he lost his hand, it was for a higher purpose and it he was hurting only himself. Now it cost him his daughter as well. This has tempered his desire to fling himself into the fray with some of his old caution. His divorce and sense of responsibility toward his daughter make him somewhat reluctant to approach women. In particular those who show him obvious attraction. He has abandoned the idea of a girlfriend or even remarriage, but is very cautious as to how his actions may affect Tina.
» Other Notes: He is somewhat sensitive about the state of his right hand, and keeps it gloved most of the time. He has a daughter who he is frequently allowed to see and sometimes have over to his home. Tina Shin is PBed by Nozomi Ohashi and is 8 years old. http://www.insanejournal.com/userpic/18728486/1456895. Kevin is heterosexual, though a combination of nervousness and a fear of finding someone new he could let down, keep him from actively looking. He is skilled in Marine hand-to-hand combat, and has adapted it to the use of primarily his left hand. He now writes with his left hand as his knowledge of using one hand from his godly days helped him learn to write with it faster than it normally would have.
» Sample Journal: Well, another day and another buck. Being a security guard at a mall wasn't exactly how I saw myself. From the god who sacrificed his hand to save the world, to a proud member of the United States Marine Corps, to this. Still, no way I was taking a desk job. There was always the combat instructor gig, but that would take me too far from Tina, so that was out. No, for now this is where I'll stay.
Rebecca and I had few problems discussing visiting hours and days I could take Tina. It's funny, it's almost like we're friends again. I miss her some days, but we married too young. So much in love we didn't take the time to really get to know each other. Tina seems to be adjusting okay and that's what's important.
Now that I'm home I'll just take a shower and then get ready for Tina's visit tomorrow. Maybe I'll check my email fir..what the hell?
» Sample Log:
Frankly Kevin found the email downright disturbing. He tried ignoring it, but the damn thing kept coming back. When he finally followed the directions it left..it was clear that whatever this was had something to do with the reincarnated spirits of ancient beings like himself. Though what for escaped him.
For now it'd have to wait as Rebecca was pulling in to the driveway. He smiled as Tina got of her side and ran up to him. "Daddy!"
"Hi sweet pea," he said, holding her with his good arm. He looked up at his ex-wife and gave a polite smile. "Hi Becca."
"Hi Kev." It was their old nicknames from high school and the first sign that their relationship was healing. They'd never be together again, but he wanted them to be friends at least. Tina deserved to have both her parents in her life. "You know when Tina's got to take her vitamins?"
"Once in the morning around 11:00am and again around 8:00pm."
"Trust a military man to be accurate." She smiled, though there was a sadness there. She bent down to give their daughter a kiss. "Alright sweetie, you have fun with Daddy, okay?"
The little girl nodded, happily holding her father's good hand. She knew his other hand hurt so she didn't grab that one. "I will, Mom."
Rebecca called a final "bye" before leaving. As Kevin guided his daughter inside he thought about what he was proudest of. It wasn't being a marine or a former god, but of being a father. She was his duty now. And it was one he didn't need a threat of worldly destruction to fulfill.
