Deity Information
» Pantheon:
Greek
» Deity: Hephaestus
» Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hephaestus
» Divine Family: {Hera-mother, Zeus-father(?)}; {Aphrodite-wife}; {siblings-Ares, Eileithyia, Enyo and Hebe}; [Thetis-foster mother], {children-Thalia, Eucleia, Eupheme, Philophrosyne, Palikoi, Kabeiroi, Kabeirides and Euthenia}

» Mythology: Hephaestus is the smith of the gods, famous for having created the weapons and armor of many gods and heroes, including Zeus' own thunderbolts. Among the most famous of these creations are Athena's Aegis, Aphrodite's girdle, Achilles armor, Hercules' bronze clappers, Apollo's chariot, Eros' bow, and Hermes' sandals and helmet. Also among his godly profiles are fire, volcanoes, and healing, particularly of poisons and sicknesses of the mind.

Hephaestus' origins are disputed. In some accounts he is the son of Zeus and Hera. However, in the Iliad he is believed to be the child of Hera, who birthed him as revenge for Zeus' asexual birth of Athena. This account is disputed, as Hephaestus was supposedly the one to free Athena from Zeus' skull with an axe. Born lame, Hera rejected him and cast him from Olympus. In some accounts he returned to defend his foster mother, Thetis, from Zeus' advances and was cast down a second time, which is said to have further aggravated his condition. However if this latter story is true, Hephaestus seems to have focused all of his anger upon his mother. Upon his final return to Olympus, he created a golden throne for Hera, but when she sat on it she couldn't get up. The gods tried to convince him to free her, but he refused, stating that he had no mother. It finally took Dionysus getting Hephaestus drunk and leading him back to release Hera.

Hephaestus' reputation in Olympus grew to an extent that in order to keep the gods from feuding with each other over the hand of Aphrodite, he was chosen to be given to her hand as his wife. However Aphrodite resented her arranged marriage and often had affairs with other gods, particularly Ares. Hephaestus learned of her affair with Ares from Apollo, so he used a chain-link net to capture the pair while they were intimate and drag them before the other gods to shame them. Instead the gods found the whole thing amusing. Hephaestus was eventually persuaded by Poseidon to release the pair in exchange for a guarantee that Ares would pay the adulterer's fine, and if not, he himself would. Hephaestus would later on claim in the Odyssey that he would return Aphrodite to her father in return for his bride-price.

Despite this failed marriage Hephaestus was known to have had several lovers and children of his own with them, including Aglaia of the Graces, who gave him four children, the Sea Nymph, Nabeiro, with whom he sired the Cabeiri. He has also sired other children by unknown mothers. Another incident involved Athena, in that Poseidon supposedly used Hephaestus' gullibility and eager to please nature to convince him to pursue a relationship with Athena. Rejecting him for his appearance and lameness, Hephaestus, following Poseidon's intentionally bad advice, angrily tried to force the issue. This would result in Athena escaping, but some of Hephaestus' seed would impregnate Gaia herself, siring a son, Erichthonius. There are rumors that Aphrodite's sons, Harmonia and Eros may actually be Hephaestus', though no record of the two actually sharing a marriage bed is documented. Though it is implied the two may have been treated by Hephaestus as his own.

» Current Name: Henry Phillips
» Birthdate: 8/21/66
» Height: 6'3"
» Distinguishing Marks: Henry walks with a limp in his right leg, requiring a cane.
» Family: {Gerald & Cynthia-parents, deceased}; {siblings-none}; {children-none}; {pets-Cat-Freud}
» Occupation: Psychiatrist
» Currently Residing In: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
» Ability: Henry has an innate understanding of those with fractured mindsets, able to put them at ease in order to help guide them to the realizations of their own problems. He has a limited control of fire, though can't create his own. He's an exceptional tinkerer, able to put things together, take them apart, and put them back together again with minimal understanding. He can also use said parts to create innovative new things to build from them that most people would conceive. So far he only uses this talent as a hobby.

» History: This is Hephaestus' first incarnation. Born Henry Phillips to Gerald and Cynthia Phillips, Henry grew up with a innate talent for tinkering. He also grew up with a weak right leg that would never be able to support him without physical aid. However as a toddler Henry showcased a talent for taking things apart, to his parents' distress, only to amaze them later as he put them back together--even at times making them work even better than they had before. At first it seemed their boy would be headed for a manufacturing trade; however the issues with his leg never went away, making it difficult for him to partake in the physical labor that was often needed in that work. This, combined with all the teasing and mishaps he'd endured over the years helped build a cynical streak that would follow him throughout his life.

Henry would acquire a love of psychology, which he would pursue in both college and graduate school, earning a doctorate. He found he had a knack for therapy, albeit with a cynical no-nonsense edge. He rarely maintained the same patients for long, but the breakthroughs he'd make in their psychological issues often resulted in relatively quick fixes despite his blunt and sometimes irreverent approach to things. Deep down however, he enjoyed helping people, but would not admit it.

One day while waiting for a taxi, he got angry when one passed him by and a nearby man's cigarette suddenly combusted. At first Henry wrote the incident off, but other things began to happen. Candles would light brighter around him, it took more cold air to cool him off, and his leg seemed to bother him more than usual. It was then he started to receive visions his old life. He heard about the godlings in the news, and with him understanding his own nature, and who he belonged to, he began to actively avoid anything to do with it. That is, until the internet decided to work against him.

» Personality: Henry is a cynical, but deep down a good-hearted man. The events of both his human and godly life add to a plethora of regrets and bitterness. Regrets for his mistakes, and bitterness toward those he now knew had used and humiliated him. Henry is not a vengeful man, rather he just want to be left alone so he can pursue his trade and help people with their problems, lest they become other people's problems. He still likes to tinker, but as he now relates this to his memories of time with the Olympians, he often avoids it as a sort of penance/payback. He'll admit even he's not sure which. While you'll never see him cooing over a baby, he loves children, though he isn't afraid to fire back with a minor barb if insulted by one. Henry combats his former desire to please his godly family with his deeply developed cynicism acquired during his mortal life. He still likes to think the best of people, but he sure as hell doesn't expect it, especially from people asking him for things. The last thing he wants is to be someone's tool again, and being the a virtual slave to be used and mocked by his former family is his deepest rooted fear.

» Other Notes: Henry is a licensed psychiatrist and therapist. He is straight, but he has long ago stopped pursuing women as it's not an endeavor he wants to get mixed up in again, though if pressed he'll admit to deep-rooted self-esteem issues.

» Sample Journal: Francis Draven, classic Oedipal Complex, at least if Freud had his way. The man was so freaking attached to his mother that he felt like attacking her fiance on his wedding day. My first impression would be to use the technical term, loony, and call it an evening. Then again, as someone with his own Mommy issues, albeit his didn't throw him off a freaking cloud, but I digress; I can't really judge the guy too harshly. In our next session I'll see what I can do to try and find the heart of this fixation. Let's just hope he never got beat by his father for trying to force himself on his mother-in-law, step-mom..foster-mom... Goddammit I hate my family. Guy should be grateful his mom's not being raped by a friggin' goat.

» Sample Log:
"Okay, Mr. Draven. You're saying that you believe this man is trying to take your mother out of your life? Henry asked.

"Yes, Doctor. He's no good for her"

Henry sits forward a little, subletting opening the man's mind a bit.

"Right, sooo... are you sure this has nothing to do with what you told me about your Dad? Your mother's first husband."

"What? No... he was never around, how could he...?

"Mr. Draven, are you afraid that maybe, just maybe, if your mom gets married that you would be losing the only parent that ever cared about you?"

The man gaped for a moment before responding. "I... yes."

"Uh huh, and am I not mistaken in that you yourself are married with children? Two boys as a matter of fact?"

"Yes... but--"

"But this," Henry interrupts the man. "You have a family of your own who loves you and needs you. Your mom's always going to be your mom, but she's got a life to live, and so do you. So my advice, is that you man-up, cut the umbilical chord, and show your mother she did a good job raising you by showcasing a maturity and sense of obligation that your own dad never had the balls to do. How's that sound?"

The man is silent as Henry casually takes a drink of a glass of water.

"I... yes! You're right! I've been acting like a child about this whole thing. I realize it now! Thank you, Doctor."

"You're welcome, will I be seeing you again, Mr. Draven."

"Maybe to update you on things, but I think you've really cut through to the problem. I really appreciate it!"

Henry stood up, cane in hand. "I know you do. Now good luck to you."
