» Deity: Melinoe
» Reference: Here!
» Divine Family: {mother & father} Persephone and Zeus; {spouse} Nope; {siblings} Plenty of half-siblings on Olympus, but her closer, more Underworldly siblings are Makaria and Zagreus; {children} Nada.
» Mythology: There isn't much written on the being of Melinoe, aside from the usually accepted story that resident manwhore Zeus took the form of Hades and decided to sleep with Persephone, resulting in the birth of dear Melinoe, limbs half-white because of Zeus's brilliance on Mt. Olympus, half-black because of Persephone's residing in the Underworld.
She was given the goddess-ly task of making sure that the propitiations offered to the ghosts who were bound to the earth made them happy, which you can imagine isn't necessarily the greatest job, ever. Melinoe walked the earth at night with a troupe of ghosts and from what the myth states is the reason that dogs bark at absolutely 'nothing' in the middle of the night, assuming that they sense things beyond your run-of-the-mill human.
It's also said that Melinoe is the Orphic name for Hekate, though the latter is generally associated with being the goddess of witchcraft, magic, and the night.

» Current Name: Mariana Perales
» Birthdate: 11/01/1988
» Height: 5’4”
» Distinguishing Marks: Pierced ears, right and left lobes only.
» Family: {mother & father} Maria and Salvador; {marital status/spouse} Terribly single; {siblings} An older brother - Adrián; {children} None; {pets} A goldfish named Oro.
» Occupation: Mortician.
» Currently Residing In: New York, NY
» Ability: Communication with ghosts; at least those who are stuck. This seems to hit her more in the mortal life if she's around a higher-activity area, such as a hospital, cemetery or a former battlefield-essentially anywhere that someone's (or a lot of someones) died. She hears voices fairly plainly, and though she has learned to tune them out, they seem to find ways of getting her to pay attention if she's taking too long ("Can I please sleep?" Why? "Oh, piss off. You remember sleep. I need that. For twelve hours.") One of their favorites is showing themselves as they looked when they passed, usually the ones who didn't go particularly peacefully. This, too, she seems to manage fairly well if she paces herself, and it comes easier if the place is one of minimal activity, such as a grocery store.
» History: Because Melinoe is usually always amongst the souls of those who have passed, she has always felt as though she has passed through time and experienced it in her own way. However, this is her first reincarnation, and it’s been anything but boring for her—though perhaps not in the way she’d like.
Her life as Mariana began in Barcelona, Spain, the daughter of Salvador and Maria Perales, a devout Catholic couple. They lead a simple life with Salvador working rather long hours as a banker; Maria as a nurse at a local nursing home. Early on, Mariana would babble to no one in particular as babies tend to do, and her parents thought nothing more of this simple act. All was well until Mariana’s vocabulary became more well-defined, and her sentence structure seemed a bit too advanced for her age. “Oh, look how smart she is!” was all the rage in the family until Mariana began having complete conversations on her own. She would speak, then pause as though she were listening to a response… and then answer accordingly. The day Maria asked who her daughter was speaking to, the three-year-old Mariana replied, “Aunt Lucia,” and the woman immediately blanched and crossed herself. Aunt Lucia was Maria’s great-aunt who had passed away when she was thirteen. How could her toddler have possibly known anything about Aunt Lucia?
After heavy discussion with Salvador, they decided to approach a priest at their church. There was a small blessing, with the good padre stating that “children will often see those holy beings that the darkness of the world has blinded us to,” and that she would likely grow out of it. This seemed to appease them for a while.
Somewhere around the time Mariana went to school for the first time, her parents had sat her down to explain to her that the people she was conversing with were not real, and that people might think it very strange and odd of the girl if she were to speak to no-one that they could see. This, too, worked for a little while. All was fine through Mariana’s first communion. She tried to not talk to ‘Those Who Follow Me’, as she called them. Puberty, however, somehow made things worse. And it was at age 14 that Mariana Perales began remembering a life that was her own, but she had not lived in this modern life.
She was still Mariana, but had always been Melinoe…
One day, when she was 16, her brother had overheard her having a conversation (even though she’d tried so hard to hide it!). As much as he loved his little sister, Adrián found her actions far too strange to be anything other than just that: Strange. Not to mention unnerving. He confronted his parents, who then confronted poor Mariana who, by all accounts, was mostly just fine with her ability (save her lack of sleep). And when she would not renounce whatever devil was living in her, they resorted to taking her for an exorcism. Terrifying as it was, the only purpose it truly served was getting their daughter to stop talking to any spirits out loud; and she eventually learned how to ‘tune’ them out for a while.
After completing her high school years at Infanta Isabel d'Aragó (where she did learn most of her English), her parents thought it best that she might depart Barcelona… to travel abroad. To go to university wherever she liked.
From there, she chose New York. At the University of New York, she majored in Biology. Somewhere along the way, Melinoe made the decision to add mortuary sciences for a minor. When her parents asked just why she would choose this, all she could say was, “I will always be needed.”
She has never had a boyfriend, and has likewise never been kissed. Most of the boys in Barcelona thought her too strange, and she never gave herself the time to try between her courses, her part-time job at a coffee shop on campus, and attempting to socialize with the dearly departed when she was able to do so.
Melinoe eventually moved to the Big Apple. She currently works at the first job that she gained once she left Albany—a family-owned funeral home where they allow her to work during the early evenings. As long as she did her job, and nothing overly odd was going on… what did it matter when she worked? When Frank Sinatra says that if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, Meli believes it sincerely.
» Personality: Ah, Melinoe. She's really quite sweet once you get to know her, but after dealing with grumpy and often just-plain-pissy ghosts, she puts her guard up quite often; more stoic than she probably knows what to do with because of them. She finds it difficult to complain much about anything, but when she does--when it finally hits the breaking point, it's pretty intense (anywhere from sobbing uncontrollably to breaking things and screaming) and straight from the soul. Part of this, she will admit, is the fact that she has such a hard time sleeping like a normal person. Meli really does like being happy. Music, movies (especially old movies), books, gummy candy, perfume and flowers make her happy. It's the getting to the point that is the hardest part when the ghosts are especially restless and when she's in a higher activity area, such as near a hospital.
To counteract the spirits that give her grief, she speaks very plainly to them. She tries ever so hard to convince them that whatever they were trying to finish on the planet was, indeed, finished. And that they can go to the next life--whatever that may be for them. This works reasonably well with small children (who for Melinoe are the most heartbreaking), but when it comes to bullheaded adults, well... they follow her around like children might, and they seem to be the ones who cause her the most grief when they want her attention. Fortunately for her, she can tune it out to stay sane a lot of the time. Just not for very long. Her 'wards' seem to only want to come out at night, during those 'witching/trinity' hours of 12, 3 and 6. While time may not really exist as a real thing to them, they seem to have it down.
All this leads Meli to sleep during the day most of the time, and for her mortal job, the funeral directors don't seem to mind ("They're not going anywhere. Just have them ready for their date by tomorrow afternoon.").
When it comes to her parents, Melinoe loves and adores Persephone and Hades. She truly is a daddy's girl, though Hades can be reasonably cold, as it were and is very doting on her mother. Even if the manwhore also known as Zeus is her biological father… he doesn’t really give a rat’s ass about her. Why should she about him? Most of her Olympian half-siblings keep to their own lives and disasters and seem to barely acknowledge that she exists. As far as Meli’s concerned, Team!Underworld is her family.
And dogs? Melinoe is terrified of them, especially since they've been barking at her as long as she can remember. This could possibly make any effort to befriend Cerberus in the future quite interesting, but Cerberus had always been a good dog to especially Hades, so that makes him different. Papa's pup wouldn't hurt her. It's those other mortal dogs that are loathsome.
She loves cats, though. They seem to like her back.
Meli also desires to have something of a normal friendship with...anybody. The ghosts make it difficult from time to time, when they want the attention that she just doesn't want to give right then. She finds it tiring in this mortal body to tune them all out when they want to be heard, but some days are easier than others. And she is thankful for that.
» Other Notes: Melinoe has picked up some conversational, well, most languages over the course of her existence, but in mortal life, she is fluent in both Castellano and Español due to her upbringing in Spain, and will often speak with something of a lisp because of the ‘th’ sound in place of ‘s’ or a soft ‘c’.

Is it wrong of me to want to kick the toy poodle up the street from work? Because that little bastard is grating my nerves. Why in the world would anyone want a creature that gives off that terrible high-pitched yapping?
No one would miss it. It disturbs the families of the dearly departed during the services. I'm just glad they do not know it's me that is the problem.
» Sample Log:
She was so weird.
They all thought she was weird. Melinoe had heard them talking amongst themselves while she took a break. She'd been there for three days and already had a few conversations with those who had been brought in while she made them up for their final performance. "Is she nuts? Is she a necro? What the hell is with her? I don't know but she does a better job than any of the rest of us."
In time, they would figure out that the conversations 'Mariana' was having with their late clients really did match up to their former professions when she would ask about them, or their children. Or their hobbies. None of them knew what to make of her, but she was more comfortable than anyone had ever been when dealing with this job.
Melinoe finished working on a 102-year-old lady who had been a nun before she left to start a family, almost á la "Sound of Music" when her boss came in.
"Hey, Mariana?" asked Joe as the dark-haired woman washed her hands.
"Yes, Joe?" Meli looked over at him with blue eyes that one might register on a color scale as 'cornflower'.
Joe shifted a bit uncomfortably as he waited for his employee to dry her hands. "I just want you to know you're doing a fantastic job. I've never seen someone work as well as you do. But..." He sighed, leaning against the wall.
"But?" Melinoe chuckled darkly and found a frown in the process. "Joe, are you letting me go?"
He shook his head quickly. "No! Geeze, no. I doubt I could find someone like you in a million years. It's just... You're kind of freaking everyone else out. Having conversations with the bodies as though they're actually talking back."
She kept that frown and sighed herself. Meli had to remember that regular, modern mortals who didn't have a 'gift' would not understand her ways. "It's...only my way of trying to understand how this person really was in life, even if it isn't them talking back to me." Well, they were, but Joe didn't need to know that. "I know this dear lady was a nun and a mother and I tried to envision her loving and devoting herself to her Christ and a family of her own later." And the woman had done both. "That's all. I don't mean to scare everyone." Her features softened and Joe relaxed.
"Right, then." He patted her arm with a nod and turned to leave. "Just... keep it down or turn the radio on for now. Have a good night, Mariana. See you tomorrow."
The dear old lady smiled up at Melinoe. "What a darling man. It's a shame they'd put you in the loony bin if you told them the truth. It's all right, dear. We won't tell." The goddess smiled right back.
"I know. It's those that are like you that make me happy that I can speak with you. You look lovely, Enid. Your family will miss you, and so will I when you move on."
