» Mythology:

The Egyptian god Anubis is associated with mummification and the Egyptian afterlife. He was most often portrayed as human with the head of a jackal, black in color. Other times he would be portrayed as a jackal. He is thought of being the deity over the funerary process, embalming, and mummification, helping to usher souls into the afterlife. The Egyptian process of mummification was a complex ritual meant to prepare the deceased for the afterlife. Most of the body's organs would be removed, the brain discarded and the liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines placed in canoptic jars. The heart and kidneys would remain in the body. The body would be dried out, rinsed, covered in oil, and wrapped in linens, then laid to rest in a sarcophagus and entombed with what possessions they wanted with them in the afterlife.

Anubis is an important figure in the Egyptian underworld, the Du'at. His role is that of judge, deeming if the souls of the dead are worthy to pass on into the Egyptian underworld. He determined this in a weihng ceremony, where he would weigh the deceased's heart on a scale against the feather of truth. If the heart was lighter than the feather, the soul could pass on into the afterlife. If the heart was heavier, the heart and soul would be devoured by Ammit, a demon known as the soul-eater.

Anubis is most often attributed as the son of Set and Nephthys, though some early accounts call him the son of Ra and Hesat, and others the son of Osiris and Nephthys. An account of Anubis's birth is told where Nephthys tricked Osiris, her brother, into her bed, resulting in Anubis's birth. Her husband, Set, wanted to kill the child, so Nephthys hid him in the marshes of the Nile, where he was found by Isis, Osiris's wife, and raised by her.

Set murdered Osiris, after which Anubis took the remains and enbalmed the body, developing the mummification process. Osiris took on the headship over the underworld, Anubis still serving as judge over the dead, and allowing worthy souls to pass on to the underworld. Anubis's wife, Anput, is considered to be his female aspect or counterpart. Their daughter, Kebechet, is the deification of embalming.

» Family: Margaret and Gary Hall {adoptive parents}; Anne Hall (15), Joseph Hall (13) {adoptive siblings}
» Occupation: college student
» Currently Residing In: Los Angeles, UCLA campus
» Abilities:

Mason is stronger and more durable than he looks, operating on a peak human level. When in places with a significant history of death, Mason has enhanced strength, stamina, and durability, about three times the norm for him. He feels invigorated in these places. This effect is strongest in graveyards, though also present in hospitals, funeral homes, nursing homes.

Mason also has a 'death sense'. He can actually sense it, when a person is near death. Mason can even sense unexpected, sudden deaths. He has to be near the person to get the sense, and it occurs within a few minutes of natural deaths, within about twenty seconds of unexpected deaths.

Mason can read into the motives of others, something that comes naturally to him. He can sense whether or not a person has good intentions. This even leads to him having a good knack for knowing if someone is being honest or not.

Mason has vivid dreams of his past lives and even of his godly existance. The dreams, of course, are memories of his past lives. He has even travelled into the Egyptian underworld, the Du'at, on occasion in his dreams, which in reality is less like dreaming and more like a kind of astral projection, his consciousness actually travelling to the underworld and back while he slumbers. During his trips to the Du'at in this state, Mason can actually communicate with the souls there. When he does this in his sleep, he cannot be woken until he has returned from the trip.

Mason (though he doesn't know it yet), also has the ability to shadowwalk. This ability only works between graveyards that Mason has been to before, but he can step into the shadows in one graveyard and come out in another graveyard. He does this with conscious effort. He can transport up to two other people with him while doing this.

Mason was born in the tiny community (population 63) of Wood Lake, in Cherry County, Nebraska. His mother, the county wild child, had run away from home at the age of 16, returning home a few months later pregnant. Her parents allowed her to stay for the baby's sake, though she disappeared once again once he was born. The baby was adopted by his mother's older cousin Margaret, and her new husband, Gary. The baby, named Mason, proved to be a very fussy and moody. He never bonded well with his family and was prone to angry tantrums. The years did take the fight out of him some, but he grew into a melancholy and quiet child, more likely than not to scowl or glare when he looked at anyone.

Things weren't much better when he started school. Mason didn't make friends and his teachers didn't think much of him. He'd made the mistake early on of sharing with his peers about the dreams he'd have sometimes while sleeping, vivid dreams of past lives. He didn't know that was what they were, and to the other little kids (and his teachers too), he sounded like he was stark raving mad when he would speak of them. He learned pretty quickly not to share about such things.

He had a natural curiosity about life (and death) and a very high intelligence, though it wasn't until halfway through grade school that he began to apply himself in school and start to show his potential, revealing himself to be something of a prodigy in the area of science. Mason developed some very specific interests during this time. Weighing and measuring things had always interested him, so he did especially well in these areas of math and science. He became engrossed in history as well when they started learning about ancient Egypt and the pyramids, and Mason wanted to learn everything he could about them. Wanting to give Mason more access to information and learning, his parents bought him a used computer at the age of twelve, and got it linked to a local Internet provider. Mason did use the computer to learn so much more about his interests. The Internet also finally help Mason to develop some socially, finding peers who he was able to relate to.

In real life, Mason still had no real friends to speak of, and was still the odd one out at school. He didn't appear to much mind, he didn't have much in common with his peers. He wasn't really interested in sports. Mason had found that he really enjoyed spending time in a small country cemetery near their home of all places. It seemed peaceful and beautiful to him, and he always felt more focused and energetic there for whatever reason. Other kids saw that, and it was just one more reason to stay away from Mason.

Mason was tracked toward college, and though his family didn't have the money, he did well enough academically that he was able to get his costs covered through scholarships. He applied to several good colleges, and was accepted to UCLA. College was a difficult transition for Mason, despite being glad to get out of Nebraska. He was used to solitude, liked solitude, and it was difficult to come by in his new setting. Instead, there were people interacting with him constantly. Mason's natural inclination was to keep to himself, which he did for most of his first semester. He realized after a while that no one was judging him, most people weren't rude to him and there seemed to be several people who wanted to get to know him better.

Mason slowly started to come out of his shell. He began to go more places with his roommate, Russ, who was much more outgoing than him. He got taken along to some clubs and bars, and found that a little alcohol would help him get over his anxieties just enough to be able to talk to people he didn't know more easily and have a good time. He also decided to check out one of the campus's LGBTQ groups, and ended up meeting a few people that way.

» Personality:

Mason is a little odd. He does want to fit in, but doesn't quite know how. He is quiet and timid at first, until he is fairly certain that trying to have a conversation with another person wouldn't end in total disaster. He lived his life in Nebraska trying to blend in, but that never did work out for him. He has very unusual interests and tastes that just didn't fit well with small town country life. Mason has found it easier to connect with people online rather than in real life. He still has many friends online who he's known for years now.

Now that Mason is living in the city, he's becoming more of his own person, developing his own style, a look he's more comfortable with. Mason tends to dress in black or darker shades of colors. He's gotten his ears pierced and has developed a small addiction for piercing. He goes back to the shop about once a month to get something else done. He's painted his nails and worn guyliner a few times while going out, experimenting with that look.

Mason is guarded about some aspects of his life. He has very vividly realistic dreams, that have even at times had an impact on his life while awake. When taking French in high school, he began dreaming about living as a Frenchman in Nazi-occupied France. He became completely fluent in French within a week. He had a similar experience with Spanish. He can't explain these things, and fears for his sanity. At the very least, he's afraid he might get locked up if others became aware of his eccentricities.

Mason sometimes gets in the way of himself making friends. He can get very anxious when meeting new people, fumbling with his words, even becoming a bit klutsy. Once he's used to a person, these mannerisms fade off. He still tends to be the quiet thoughtful friend, always seems to be holding back a little.

Mason is very intelligent. Some of that is an advantage he has due to his past lives, but he s very smart in general too. Mason is very intuitive as well. He is a good judge of character. He has a good sense of when someone is being dishonest with him. He can be a little too suspicious, which is good for anticipating and dealing with danger, but not so good for making and keeping friends.

» Other Notes:
Mason is fluent in both Spanish and French. He took a year of each in high school, enough to trigger his past life memories of speaking those languages. His teachers believed he was a prodigy with languages as well as with science. Mason also knows some Egyptian (the ancient kind) and can read Hieroglyphs.

Mason enjoys canning, and makes homemade jams and preserves as a hobby. He likes going out to the orchards and vineyards himself to pick the fruit. He's a capable cook and enjoys baking.

He also is very good with weights and measurements, having had a particular interest in them since early childhood. Mason has gotten good at estimating the weight or height or size or age of an object or person at a glance.

Mason has never dated, though he isn't completely inexperienced with either girls or guys. For him, he can find both attractive, and tends to value personality and connection to a person as well as their appearance.

Mason enjoys bars, clubs, and concerts, though he will tend to be a wallflower in these settings, preferring to people watch rather than to approach someone himself. He's definitely not a dancer, and if made to he'd do some really awkward moves.

» Sample Journal:

My parents want me home for spring break. Ugh. That's the last place I want to be. No offense to them, but I really can't stand the thought of going back there. My little brother took over our room the instant I left for college. Anything of mine that is still there is packed away in the attic. And it's not like I'd have anything to do there. It's not like I have any friends there. I don't.

It's not like I'd have much to do here either, but it would still be better. Maybe I could actually see some of the sights. Go to some museums, some graveyards. Maybe I'll go out to the orchards again. Just not out with Russ and his friends again anytime soon. I kind of ended up acting really stupid the other week. I really am a lightweight.

» Sample Log:

Mason was pretty comfortable with letting his online friends stay online friends for the most part. He'd gone and met an online friend once before, thinking it might be fun. They'd hit it off real well online and even over the phone. Mason had felt a connection, and had wanted to see how things would go meeting in person. They hadn't gone so well. It had gotten super awkward and weird, which Mason assumed full responsibility for. He'd been nervous, which had caused him to be fumbling over his words and be less coordinated than usual. He hadn't made a good impression at all, not to mention that his friend he'd been meeting had turned out to be different than he'd anticipated too.

Despite swearing to himself 'never again', here he was. He'd agreed to meet his new acquaintance from the message boards thing at the Starbucks on South Central at 9pm. It gave Mason enough time to get something to eat after his classes, change his clothes, and try to mentally prepare himself. Mason found some junk food in his dorm room to snack on, not wanting to take time to cook for himself or stop anywhere to eat. He microwaved himself a hot pocket and ate it before starting to figure out what to wear. What he'd had on, a black print tee and black skinny jeans was okay, but he wanted to put a little more thought into his appearance. He kept the jeans but swapped out shirts, then went down the hall to the bathroom to finish getting ready. Mason washed up and put on some eyeliner, a new look he was trying out for himself that he liked. Returning to his room, he put a fresh coat of black on his nails and put on his favorite silver necklace and chain bracelet. Mason shoved his phone in his pocket, and after a moment's thought, his pocketknife too, just in case. He didn't expect to need it, but the city could be a dangerous place sometimes.

Leaving campus, Mason took the buses he needed and was let off down the street from Starbucks. He pulled out his phone to check the time, seeing he was there a couple of minutes late, thanks to the buses never being quite on schedule. Mason walked down the sidewalk, which was fairly busy. He saw quite a few people standing outside the Starbucks, and he wondered to himself if his new acquaintance would be waiting outside or inside. He looked for a red hoodie, what they'd said they'd be wearing.
